It is time for the finals of the FIFA World Cup and the world is geared up to witness the battle betweentwo of the top sides in the footballing world today, Germany and Argentina. Both sides have fared through contrasting routes to arrive in the finals and have a set of key players in their ranks that have been instrumental in getting them here.
Let us take a look at some of the players that we need to watch out for:
Manuel Neuer – Germany goalkeeper Neuer has been a pivotal part of their lineup for quite some time now and the Bayern man has had yet another phenomenal tournament between the sticks. He has played the role of not only a shot stopper but also as a sweeper behind the defensive line on multiple occasions to keep the opposition at bay. He will have to be at his best when he faces the three man strike force of Argentina and you can be rest assured that he will be in top form.
Thomas Muller – Not the most intimidating figure at first glance, Muller’s records instead will speak on behalf of him. The false no 9 for the Germans has had yet another phenomenal world cup and he will look to net a couple of goals to land the golden boot once again. He has linked with Klose to utter perfection and will look to frustrate the Argentinean defense.
Mats Hummels- Be it, in attack or defense, Hummels has done an amazing job for Germany. The Dortmund centre half has been a solid rock in the heart of their defense and is also a big threat in set pieces. He is one of the highest scoring defenders in this year’s tournament and will look to add more to his two goal tally.
Lionel Messi – Arguably the biggest star in the finals, Lionel Messi has perhaps single handedly pulled Argentina to this stage. The Barcelona striker has netted goals at crucial junctures to pave the way ahead for the Albaceleste and he will look to add the prestigious trophy that has evaded him for over a decade now to his cabinet much like his predecessor Maradona.
Javier Mascherano – Mascherano has been the vital link between attack and defense and is one of Argentina’s crucial players. His spirited performance against the Netherlands would certainly erase any doubts over his dedication and he will once again look to replicate the fine form he has been producing throughout the tournament in the finals.
Gonzalo Higuain – With injuries to Aguero and Di Maria, Higuain has some additional burden on his shoulders and the Napoli striker will be more than up for the challenge. Apart from Messi, Higuain is the only other campaigner to net a goal for Argentina and will toe their line heading into the finals against Germany. The striker is known to perform in crunch matches and Sunday’s final may just be the occasion for him.
